The 2020-cycle redistricting maps are still being contested in seven federal cases. Here is the docket.
The seven cases
- Alexander v. NAACP (SC) — remanded to 4th Circuit for further proceedings. Racial-gerrymander claim on Congressional District 1.
- Callais v. Landry (LA) — Supreme Court reargued October 2025. Second Congressional District compliance with the Voting Rights Act.
- Petteway v. Galveston County (TX) — 5th Circuit en banc reheard. Coalition-district challenge under Section 2 VRA.
- Milligan v. Allen (AL) — remedial map litigation ongoing. Court-drawn map produced a second Black-opportunity district that flipped D in 2024.
- NC racial-gerrymander — still in state court. Republican legislature drew a 10-4 GOP map after the state supreme court flipped.
- Utah proportional-representation — challenge under state constitution. Utah Supreme Court ruled 4-1 for plaintiffs; remedial phase pending.
- NY IRC v. Hochul — round three of the New York independent-commission process. Final map expected before 2026 primaries.
What outcomes to watch
If Callais goes for plaintiffs, Louisiana keeps its second Black-opportunity district. If it goes for the state, the VRA's Section 2 will be significantly narrowed — and every gerrymandering case in the country changes.
